Repubs vs Dems vs CJ on Censorship
The Democrats and Republicans tend to agree on many censorship issues. Freedom of speech and the press are fundamental rights that every American believes and abides by. The American Internet Censorship Act that was recently proposed, SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act), advocates a complete change of the internet. Piracy is a serious problem and Hollywood claims that it must be stopped through this bill. The bill will force more stringent copyright laws to be enforced on any website that contains any sort of Music or Media (such as a movie). These laws will make it almost impossible to post any sort of copyrighted media and thus make it impossible for piracy to occur. Many people dislike the bill because they claim that it will inhibit innovators from creating and infringe upon Americans right to free speech. The internet is merely an extension of the first ammendment, many claim, and posting whatever one wants sh9uld always be legal. Advocates, most of who include Hollywood bigwhigs, claim that piracy must be stopped and that this is the only way to do it. A bipartisan coalition has formed to fight this bill in congress including Ron Paul (R) and Lloyd Doggett (D), both from Texas, two different political affiliations, but agreeing on the issue. A large portion of Congress is ready to shoot down the bill once its proposed, and of this portion it is extremely bipartisan. It is nice to see Republicans and Democrats agree on a subject! As for me, I agree with the notion that the bill should be shut down. The internet will be completely different. Youtube, Facebook, and other popular websites could be shut down too easily due to the copyright laws that are being advocated. If someone posted a video clip from a popular movie onto Facebook or Youtube, this act would give policy enforcers the ability to shut down this person's Facebook or Youtube account, and if it happens enough Facebook and/or Youtube would be forced to shut down entirely. So many people would be worried about whether or not the information they are spreading is valid or not that the internet would become like a totalitarian regime which rules through fear. Fear would be the ruler of the internet and censorship would be the end result whether that was the initial goal or not. Censorship of the internet is no different than any other form of expression and thus, the bipartisan support is a Godsend.
