Foreign Policy: Republicans vs Democrats
Republicans generally tend to support a foreign policy that displays strength and authority over the world. Defense spending is mainly justified as for the safety of American freedom. Mitt Romney displays the general Republican attitude of a big defense budget, alliance with Israel, tough border protection, and a careful eye on the Chinese. Only in recent times has republican support for the current wars decreased, mainly due to a public disgust. The popular view of the times is that multiple wars is unsustainable, so the republican candadites have somewhat adopted this view. The strongest believer in this is Ron Paul, who views the wars as unsustainable and unnecessary. Obama has shown through his policies somewhat similar views, and also quite different ones. After an almost complete term, Obama's campaign promise of the troops leaving are finally coming into fruition. In regards to Israel, Obama has much less of an interest in an alliance than the Republicans would like. I think that since republicans are willing to compromise on the wars, their candidate will be the best choice. This is because I agree that defense is one of the most important departments in government, and is one of the few strengths in the economy.
