2012 Presidential Candidates on the Death Penalty

Newt Gingrich: supports capital punishment and wants to add drug smuggling under capital offenses.

Ron Paul: has openly changed his opinion to oppose the death penalty chiefly out of fear that an innocent person may be sentenced to death.

Rick Perry: Supports and advocates capital punishment. In his eleven years as governor he has overseen 234 executions in his state.

Mitt Romney: in favor of the death penalty.

Rick Santorum: Santorum has not broached the subject publicly for six years and counting. However, the last time he spoke about capital punishment, we found Santorum uncharacteristically divided on the issue.

Obama feels utmost caution should be taken on the subject of capital punishment, and it should be reserved only for ‘heinous crimes’.
