Rep V Dem on Immigration
Generally, the views Republicans and Democrats hold on immigration are to be expected: Republicans believe in strengthening the border and security, while Democrats support fixing the naturalization process and enabling illegal immigrants to become citizens. Obama has not added to border security, but demanded that businesses take accountability for hiring illegal immigrants, and has said that he wants to fix the immigration system. Newt Gingrich has said that he would not advocate a forced removal of illegal immigrants who have children, grandchildren, or belong to a church from the country, however he would enact policies that would send most illegal immigrants back to their home countries. Romney has also stated that he supports allowing illegal immigrants to apply for citizenship, saying that they must "apply at the back of the line". He also believes, not suprisingly, in securing the border. Ron Paul believes in securing the border, enforcing visa rules, no amnesty, no welfare for illegal aliens, ending birthright citizenship, and getting true immigration reform passed. Overall, I believe that it is necessary to secure the border so that more illegal aliens do not enter our country, take jobs from hardworking Americans, and drag the drug wars in Mexico north. However, I do think that there should be a way for illegal immigrants to become citizens without deporting them first. The system of immigration definitely needs to be reformed so that people who could become assets to our society can live and work freely here.
