As was discussed in my earlier posts, some unemployment is necessary. The unemployment levels the United States has reached, however, are of a damaging and dangerous level, and both major political parties have plans through which they believe they can alleviate that problem.
Democrat Plan:
The incumbent Democrats have approached the problem of unemployment through the lens of social improvement as a solution, this year pouring over 62 million dollars into programs to provide subsidized jobs for young people, and tax breaks for companies who hire the long term unemployed.
This course of action has proven relatively successful, as the unemployment rate has dipped since Obama has taken office, though not nearly enough to prove anything decisively, as the rate still tops 9 percent, and the rate when Obama took office, over 10 percent, was high enough that almost any actions should have produced some results.
Republican Plan:
There are multiple Republican plans to combat unemployment, but most center on promoting business in a very general way, banking on the belief that by making businesses healthier, those businesses will be more likely to hire people, and will do so in a more organic way, growing naturally, not reliant on government funding that may or may not run out.
This plan seems to be a rather solid one, simultaneously combating large spending by the government, by eliminating expensive subsidies, and allowing business to grow in a natural way, which could very well end the recession. But this plan may be difficult to implement, because “making business healthier” is far easier contemplated than it is brought into reality, and the cyclical demon of spending vs. hiring threatens to derail the entire plan.
My Take:
I cannot hope to provide a real opinion on a topic like this. The constant changes in the economic and social fabric of the nation keep me from finding any evidence of past plans whose results could be extrapolated with a semblance of accuracy. All I can say is that given the sheer amount of debt our nation is drowning in, any spending undertaken should be well researched and well monitored. We cannot be afraid of spending if the money is going to be useful, but that use has to be clear, so that we do not waste anything more.
